Hello there! I’m Annisa and I’m an Indonesian artist and illustrator who is currently living in the beautiful city of Groningen, The Netherlands. I came to this country in 2010 for pursuing a master degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (and graduated in 2013) but decided to have a significant career switch to become an artist. When I was a kid, I was more of a sporty kid than the artsy one. Nobody (including me) ever thought of me as an artistic person! My first ever art project was to ‘paint’ with microbes (bacteria and fungi) on an agar plate for an exhibition in 2012 as part of my university science team’s summer project.
The year 2014 was the first time I learnt to paint with acrylic paints, brushes, and canvases. The act of painting was initially working as a therapy for my anxiety and depression (it was a rough year), and it actually worked really well. The feeling of my arms movements while I paint and the freedom of putting paints on empty canvases had helped me tremendously during my hard times. Fast forward to 2018, I decided to pursue painting and illustration drawing professionally.
The inspirations for my artworks come from things that I love around me; especially cats and greenery. I’m also inspired by colourful flowers, foods, and the cosiness of the Dutch lifestyle. My favourite painting media is acrylic paints, although I’m also slowly falling in love with the softness and elegance of watercolour. Aside from making art, I’m passionate about foods (cooking, baking, and growing); and the slow living and mindfulness movement. The greatest goal in my life is to live on a farm with my husband and my cat (Molly) and becoming self-(or at least locally) sustainable.
